STRESS TRIGGERS Conniving friends!

Have you ever had a so-called friend that turned into your nemesis as time went by and still remained glued to you in some way even though you’ve done all you could think of  to push this person out of your life?

Have you ever witnessed how some individuals weave themselves into your every relationship, tinting your every gathering with their presence, always finding a way to be invited through some other acquaintances?

Short of escaping to another part of the world and cutting all communication with previous contacts, there seems to be no way out!

Let’s analyze this person’s behavior.

If you have a spouse, they will undeniably do everything to become part of his/her life as well.  At family gatherings, they will have advice as to how to raise your children.  They’ll attempt to out talk or out do you at every opportunity.  If you talk of making a professional move, they’ll project one as well.  They’ll infiltrate your circle of friends and try to get close to the ones you value the most.  It’s like if it is the only way they can feel whole!

Are they <want to be> shadows?  Do they crave attention so badly that they need to be the center of your life at all times?

Cunning, manipulative and devious at times, they poison you life.

When crossed, they’ll confront you in public, getting the witnesses to take sides!  Their erratic behavior can come to spoil your every moment as you spend countless hours trying to understand their behavior.  Having you on guard or baffled seems to be their goal!  Very unpleasant and oppressive!

By the time you’re spending your evenings and days off trying to predict their next move, they have you exactly where they want you.  Whether they do this consciously or unconsciously matters little.  The effect is the same.

They are now in control of your life.

Time to act!  Not to say, that if you see this happening you shouldn’t take steps immediately.  Analyze and assess.  Plan carefully.

Start by setting firm limits.  It won’t stop them but you will inch back into control.  Preferably keep your thoughts to yourself, as sharing your plan will probably be sensed and known, igniting further assault.  It will be a long, demanding, tedious ride back.  Hopefully, the person will start losing interest and move on to assault someone else’s personal and professional life.
Cultivate indifference and stand firm.  Provide yourself with personal hobbies that are completely out of reach to this person.  Develop new acquaintances that are in other domains so that you may have a sense of being without this shadow.  This will motivate you and you’ll regain your sense of self to its full strength.

Take a stand in your household and with your relatives as to your positions on issues so that when your usurper tries to take your place on issues that do not concern him/her, your entourage knows your position clearly already.

Do not falter.  It will take time.  And as last resort, flee!  Move elsewhere.

I must warn you though that this type of person exists every where.  Your best defense is to spot them right off and set counter measures that are impenetrable.  When you are known as being genuine, authentic and honest, people will respect your decisions.  This is armor in itself!

COACHING Why do people seek it?

Let’s first define COACHING as being a means of support given by someone having expertise in a certain domain.  This support will be brought to you in consultations sessions given by email, over the phone or face to face individually or in groups.  In some cases, the goals pursued will be known by you when you begin; in others, you will search for, discover and pursue your goals with the help of your Coach.  In Life and Career Coaching, people seek to grow and enhance their capabilities.  In Grief Coaching, people wish to find a soothing comfort to learn to manage their emptiness and pain.  As you search the web, you will come across Coaching of every kind.  From anger management to marketing, from stress management to business growth, the listings compile all those offering to sooth, nurture and guide you through your present struggle.

These specialists provide a service that is presently in demand.  Most people need motivation to change, grow or move ahead.  So when they’re stuck, they’ll first try to get a grip on the situation on their own or with the help of friends and relatives.  When immediate resources fail to provide paths towards solutions, soothing comfort or relief, they may address a health physician, who may, in turn, guide them to a mental health specialist such as a therapist or psychologist.  For example, when dealing with diagnosed depression, this could be one possible course of action.

Coaching is resorted to when you do not need a Mental Health specialist.  Some physicians may suggest it when stress is the cause of the discomfort, for example.  If you are seeing a Therapist, you should definitely advise both the Therapist and the Coach when you decide to opt for Coaching as well.

A Coach is a helping, stabilizing hand that facilitates your steps towards your goal.

Coaching is a way to obtain support to learn, change for the better and grow.   It’s a way to explore difficulties encountered and possible solutions with a person that has expertise in the domain you are presently struggling with.  It’s soothing to have a sounding board listening uniquely to you and responding to your preoccupations with appropriate suggestions, allowing you to reflect on different courses of action.  You may discuss and clarify issues at your own pace.  Let’s say that it helps you progress towards your goals more rapidly while building your self-confidence along the way!

Because you can find Coaching services in practically all existing domains, it is important that you take the time to get to know your potential Coach through articles, interviews or audio conferences in order to find the appropriate match for you.  Most Coaches offer a <Getting acquainted> introductory session for this purpose.  They also need to know if you are a good match.

Why? You’ll say!  Well, there needs to be affinities and a common ground for good communication.  Fundamental values have to be shared and respected.  Otherwise, communication will be distorted by perception.  Clarity is essential.

When you seek out a Coach, you seek out support to go through something that YOU consider difficult.  It means that you’re temporarily incapacitated.  It may be that you’re going in circles or that you’re stuck and can’t seem to see the solution on your own.  Sometimes it’s like being in a maze!  When you’re in it, you struggle to find an opening but from above, one can see the way out!  A Coach helps you look in from above!

It can mean that you’re tired of facing an obstacle alone and need to talk or vent about it, on respectful terms of course.   During a consultation, the active listening process will help you reflect on what you have been tossing around.  Your Coach will mirror what you express so that you may see things more clearly and identify the steps you need to take to move forward.  When working on your assignments you will deepen your understanding.

A good Coach will help you find what you need and will tell you honestly if he/she thinks you are both a good match.  When in doubt, if you so wish, he/she may refer you to someone known that may provide the service you require.

We, as Coaches, are there to serve, in the sense that we care to bring value to your life, allowing you to grow and progress towards your goal in an accelerated, profound manner.  It is in our best interest to provide you with the resources needed for you to reach your goals and that, even if it means recommending that you seek help elsewhere.  It is a question of integrity!

When we accept clients, it is because we believe we can help them reach their goal.

As a client, you feel the comfort of having someone listen to you and share insight.  You find ideas and solutions hidden within you through brain storming.  You evacuate that layer of <TOO MUCH> that’s accumulated and fogs the path to solutions.  You purge the excess bile that nauseates you to finally see the sunrise, in its splendor, once again!

An empowering feeling of self-worth and self-confidence floods back as your driving force.  It’s refreshing, constructive, motivating, healing!

Next time you face an impenetrable wall, try it!  You’ll see how beneficial it can be!

HEALTH Care Providers plagued by

It is said that Health Care Providers are prone to Compassion Fatigue at one point or another.  The best of us are more likely to burn-out when extending our willingness to provide healing support beyond our capacity or in so trying circumstances that we fail to refuel rapidly enough to face the demand.  As you know, a breach to our inner core may be caused by exposure to some element we are more sensitive to, leaving us vulnerable.

When Empathy is part of our every encounter, we may well feel limited and start sympathizing with our client’s demise. A kinship to our client may develop which may limit our capacity to provide adequate support.  Worse, doubt in our competencies may seep in.

First, a temporary discomfort will arise which we may feel shouldn’t be taken into account.  Unfortunately, it will grow if not dealt with.  Our capacity of giving and helping may soon wither when constantly confronted with demanding cases and little time to replenish. When felt, this need to refuel must be filled and acted upon immediately.

I know! You want to continue to help and wish you could go on and on and on.

You resist taking care of yourself because, after all, you know how to monitor yourself well.  You wonder what colleagues, friends or spouse will think if you admit that your well of kindness and resourcefulness has gone dry.  You get irritated when someone mentions how tired you look.  You even wish you could avoid this issue all together and have started to isolate yourself from family and friends.

This or that client has become so trying that you may even postpone their next meeting voluntarily.  You snap at some, almost getting angry at their unwillingness to progress and their inaptitude to understand, when in a consultation!

My friend! It is time to stop, assess and face the fact that you need to refill!  Fortunately, we, <the so concerned with others’ health and welfare>, are more likely to recuperate rapidly once we’ve faced the obvious.

Who are we?  We are caregivers, professionals who experience or witness trauma such as physicians, nurses, officers of the law, emergency service personnel,  disaster service personnel, employees who work in high-risk situations, repeated survivors of work-related trauma; we are  professionals or caregivers whose client’s experience trauma, such as Therapists, Teachers, Adult-care workers, Child-care workers, Protective services workers, Family Caregivers, Employee Assistance Professionals, Insurance adjusters or Agents, Lawyers, Funeral Home Attendants;  we are Professionals in high-demands/high-stress positions such as CFO’s & CEO’s, Managers, Brokers;  finally, we are any person experiencing negative effects of work-related stress.

Leave your pride behind and consult now!  It is a wise move that will enable you to recover quickly so you can attend to the needs of all those people you feel compelled to help!

Let me remind you that you are a human being too!  There are retreats where you can be supported individually or in group.  You don’t have the leisure of time?  Well, phone or email consultations are also available.  I know, because I offer this service in five session program which is given during a four day Intensive Summer Retreat, where you can escape incognito and replenish.  This retreat can become your yearly preventive measure.  It can also be given over five consecutive weeks or more, at any time through the year, by email or over the phone.   Others offer this service as well.  Find the perfect fit for your needs, your schedule and time paucity.  No one ever has to know you’ve gone through this process of finding your wings again.  It’s just very important that you do!

As you know, you will regain your calm, self-confident composure; you will feel your energy rise and your mind clear.  Isn’t it worth it?

In our profession, the motto should definitely be <All for One,  One for All>, just like the musketeers!  Contact us to check availability and schedule your free <Getting Acquainted> session.  During this 30 minute session, we can chat on how to better assist you in this time of need:  info@guidancequest.com .  If you rather get a sense of who we are, just browse my website: http://guidancequest.com

You’ve been giving so much!  It’s time for you to take care of yourself.  Email now!  Don’t hesitate or resist any longer.  Just do it!  info@guidancequest.com

LEADERSHIP Knowledge is a Tool!

As a leader, you will be called upon to solve a variety of problems.  People will seek out your expertise to enhance performance and productivity.  Your people skills will be sought out to facilitate, even mediate at times.  Your wisdom will build your reputation and increase your responsibility to others.  It is therefore in your best interest to constantly improve your skills and be up to date on methods and systems to enhance performance, productivity and skills.  Your professional growth will also be closely linked to your self-growth.  Remember, an empty shell or an outdated one rarely leads for a long time.

How can you <sharpen the saw> effectively in this day and age, as Covey brilliantly states?

Your best bet is to search the web for programs in your field.  Fortunately, reputed institutions provide an immense selection that is both credible and of high quality.  Your sense of discrimination needs to be acute when you buy into these.  Research the credibility of the provider as it is essential.  In addition, it is well worth building your own library of reference material so that you are always prepared when asked.

Many credible authors will provide articles or free ebook that can put you up to date on topics you have somewhat ignored or neglected for a time.  Reading these will keep you up to par.   You may sign-up for ezines that will allow you to receive weekly or monthly articles on your domain of expertise.  More than one is advisable as they cover a variety of elements that can be most useful.  Bookstores overflow with interesting material to purchase.

Preparing well organized binders and placing these by topics will give you a secure sense of being prepared when having a rush meeting needing some substantial information.  Naturally these folders may be digital just as long as you have a back-up copy on hand and that they are well organized.

When someone brings up an issue or topic that you are rusty on or worst, not aware of, see it as an opportunity to really research it and return to topic with the person at a later date.  This way, you will stay on top of your game at all times.

Brilliant people will write up new systems and methods constantly so keeping track of innovations and their tested results may give you an inestimable edge at one point or another.

As a Leader, it is your responsibility to be at your best so that those looking up to you for guidance may be able to trust you.  Trust is promoted through a number of characteristics and attitudes.  One of these is to be able to trust that the information received is true and to the best interest of the person requesting it.  You are expected to be knowledgeable in your domain, not in all domains.  Being able to admit that you do not know something is also a valuable characteristic and show honesty.  If you add that you will research it at the best of your ability or suggest a proper resource, you will gain as well.

When employers or employees seek out leaders, they look for a number of characteristics.  They’ll be sensitive to attitude and seek out certain qualities.  In a certain domain of expertise, they will seek out those knowledgeable enough to provide clear, up to date, reliable, accurate data.  Your willingness to improve will be denoted and your trustworthiness will have you stand-out in times of envisioned promotions.

Some are born leaders; others become worthy of leadership, positioning themselves by building the skills and competencies needed.  We’ve just touched the tip of the iceberg here.  Looking into all the Emotional Intelligence competencies will nicely complement the cognitive side of your brain!

Having tools such as methods, systems, strategies to complement your expertise, experience and competencies will help you stand out in times of competitive situations as well.  So do take the time to <sharpen the saw> as Stephen Covey writes.

It is the best way to maintain a high standard that will undeniably set the pace for a successful Leadership!
